The Al-Andalus underpass in Jeddah is drowning in sewage water for the second day running, causing traffic jams and letting off putrid smells in neighboring areas, driving the residents out of their homes and obstructing pedestrians on Al-Andalus Road, one of the life lines of the city.
The leaks were caused by damage to the main sewage line which the National Water Company (NWC) has been unable to fix until now.
Residents of the neighborhood were livid.
Abdulrahman Al-Jahni said: “I hold the NWC responsible for delaying repairs and failing to find speedy solutions to the problem. Everyone knows that they pump sewage water into the sea, which is not a solution to the problem.”
He said there was an urgent need to solve this problem which was disrupting normal life and could lead to an epidemic of sorts.
Salem Al-Qahtani said he was stuck in the tunnel with his children, and that it took him an hour and a half to get to his house in southern Jeddah.
“We were stuck in the tunnel with our little children inhaling that foul smell which could make them sick. If my children become ill I will hold the NWC responsible,” said Ali Razami.
Rami Al-Mish, a resident in a neighboring area, said he had to move to another area because of the stench “which seeped into our bedrooms making it hard for the children to breathe.”
He added that the National Water Company is working very slowly to fix the line and doesn’t seem to have any radical solutions to avoid these problems in the future.
